A Quiet Arrival Along the Coast
Along the Salvadoran coast, there are moments that remind you just how much life still moves quietly through this small country.
It doesn’t announce itself.
It doesn’t ask to be seen.
It simply happens… most often at night.
This past season, one of those moments unfolded when a leatherback turtle—the largest turtle on Earth—came ashore somewhere along our Pacific coast.
She arrived in the darkness, pulling her massive body above the tide line, guided by something far older than memory. There, she left behind a clutch of 74 eggs before slipping back into the ocean as quietly as she came.
About two months later, 62 hatchlings made their way toward the sea.
Looking Beyond the Story
We first came across this in an article from Diario El Salvador. It caught our attention right away. But like many things here, the more we looked into it, the more there was to understand.
So we spent some time learning about the species, the challenges it faces, and what it means when something like this happens along our coast.
A Species Under Pressure
The leatherback—tortuga baule—is critically endangered, especially in the Eastern Pacific. Their numbers have dropped by more than 90 percent in recent decades. Fishing gear, coastal development, egg poaching, and a warming climate have all taken their toll.
In some places, they have nearly disappeared.
And yet… they still come.
Why El Salvador Still Matters
El Salvador is not a primary nesting ground, but it lies along a migratory path these turtles have followed for thousands of years.
When even one female chooses a Salvadoran beach, it says something. It means there is still something here she recognizes—something safe enough to continue a cycle that has been in motion long before us.
There are efforts underway to protect that. The Ministry of Environment patrols beaches, recovers eggs taken illegally, and releases hatchlings when nests are found.
It may seem like small work, but for a species where only a few survive to adulthood, each nest matters. Each one pushes back, in its own quiet way, against disappearance.
What Happens While We Sleep
What stayed with me most about this moment is how much of it happens unseen.
While most of us are asleep, a creature older than the dinosaurs makes her way across the sand, trusting that the shoreline will hold what comes next.
And while we move through our daily routines, tiny turtles—no larger than the palm of a hand—are making their first and most difficult journey, guided only by instinct and the pull of the ocean.
The Quiet Decisions That Matter
It’s easy to overlook how much depends on the quiet decisions we make.
Protecting a stretch of beach.
Keeping lights low along the shore.
Teaching the next generation why something as simple as a turtle’s nest matters.
Those choices travel farther than we do.
A Journey That Continues
Somewhere out in the Pacific right now, those 62 hatchlings are beginning a journey that will take them thousands of kilometers.
If even one survives long enough to return and nest again, it will be because a place like this—somewhere along the coast of El Salvador—remained just safe enough for that rhythm to continue.
And to me, that is something worth recognizing… in its own quiet way.
