Fodel 2026 Brings Business Support Closer to El Salvador’s Paracentral Communities

A good business idea needs more than enthusiasm. Entrepreneurs also need information, useful contacts, and opportunities to introduce their products or services to customers.

That was the purpose behind the Foro de Desarrollo Económico Local, known as Fodel 2026, held on September 30 in Ilobasco, Cabañas Oeste. The gathering brought together entrepreneurs, business representatives, government officials, and academic leaders to discuss economic opportunities in El Salvador’s paracentral region.

According to Diario El Salvador, the forum sought to connect people in Cabañas, San Vicente, Cuscatlán, and La Paz with tools, programs, and support for developing their businesses. More than 200 people attended the event, which took place at the Universidad Católica de El Salvador.

Bringing Opportunities Closer to Communities

The forum was organized at the initiative of Frank Menjívar, a Nuevas Ideas deputy representing Cabañas. Its stated purpose was to bring opportunities closer to the municipalities where people work, produce, and generate employment.

Participants included Minister of Local Development María Ofelia Navarrete, Tourism Minister Morena Valdez, and representatives of the Comisión Nacional de la Micro y Pequeña Empresa, known as CONAMYPE. Business and university representatives also participated.

What interests me about this approach is its focus on local communities. Economic development becomes easier to understand when we think about the people behind it: someone making a product, running a small shop, preparing food, or building a service that supports a family.

For these business owners, knowing where to turn for guidance can be valuable. However, making an initial connection is only the beginning. Continued assistance helps turn information into something an entrepreneur can use.

Tourism and Local Business Can Grow Together

Tourism was one of the subjects discussed at the forum. Minister Morena Valdez encouraged producers and merchants to strengthen the region’s tourism offerings and develop connections between destinations. She highlighted Ilobasco’s culture and traditions alongside the area’s natural attractions.

That connection offers an interesting way to think about local development. Visitors may come to see a destination, but their experience also depends on the surrounding businesses.

Food, handmade products, transportation, and other services can all become part of a visit. Consequently, tourism development can create opportunities for people whose businesses extend beyond hotels or major attractions.

The challenge is helping those businesses reach visitors while maintaining the qualities that make a community distinctive. Local knowledge, personal service, and traditional skills can give people a reason to stop, spend time, and return.

From a Forum to Practical Support

Events like Fodel can provide a place for people to meet institutions they might otherwise find difficult to approach. They can also help business owners exchange ideas and learn about available support.

Still, the lasting value depends on what happens after the meeting.

For example, an entrepreneur may need help promoting a product, understanding business requirements, improving recordkeeping, or identifying a suitable training program. Others may need guidance on reaching new customers or working with nearby businesses.

These are examples of the kinds of practical assistance that can matter. The published report does not establish that attendees received loans, secured contracts, or created new jobs through the forum. Those outcomes would need to be documented as the initiative develops.

Why Local Development Matters

Living in rural El Salvador, I appreciate efforts that bring information and opportunities closer to communities outside the capital.

A successful small business can make a meaningful difference to a household. It may also purchase from nearby suppliers, provide work for another person, or offer a service that neighbors previously had to travel to find.

That is why I believe local development deserves attention alongside larger national projects. Progress also takes shape through the steady work of people building something within their own communities.

Fodel 2026 provides a starting point for those connections in the paracentral region. The next chapter will be worth following: whether participants receive continued support and how that support helps their businesses move forward.
