Beneath a busy street in Antiguo Cuscatlán, archaeologists have uncovered a story that remained hidden for nearly 3,000 years.
A nearly complete human skeleton, possibly dating to around 850 BC or earlier, was discovered at the Pasaje 4 archaeological site. The burial may be one of the oldest formally documented in El Salvador.

A new report from Diario El Salvador provides more background on this important discovery. Archaeologist Carlos Flores Manzano explained that the burial was found through a carefully planned investigation rather than by accident during construction. The excavation grew from his hypothesis that ancient remains and other evidence of pre-Hispanic life were still preserved beneath modern Antiguo Cuscatlán.
Researchers now hope to use radiocarbon dating, DNA analysis, stable-isotope testing, and other scientific studies to learn more about the individual’s age, health, diet, geographic origin, and possible cause of death. Flores Manzano cautioned that the complete laboratory process could take approximately one year.
An Ancient Burial Beneath the City
The remains were discovered on July 2 in Trench 1 at the Pasaje 4 archaeological site in Antiguo Cuscatlán, La Libertad Este. Archaeologists carefully removed the burial on July 21.
The excavation was directed by Salvadoran archaeologist Carlos Flores Manzano, a doctoral candidate at Yale University. Conservators and archaeologists from the Ministry of Culture’s National Directorate of Cultural Heritage supervised the work.
According to the Ministry of Culture, the individual was buried face down. The body was positioned approximately 17 degrees east of north. The skeleton is reported to be nearly 90 percent complete, making its preservation especially remarkable after so many centuries.
The location of the remains also proved fortunate. Flores Manzano explained that the skeleton appeared almost directly in the center of the excavation trench. If it had been only a few inches to either side, recovering it without damage could have been much more difficult.
After the exposed remains were documented, they were secured with plaster and other protective materials. The entire section was then carefully lifted and transported to the National Museum of Anthropology Dr. David J. Guzmán, commonly known as MUNA.
The Date Has Not Yet Been Confirmed
Although the burial is being described as dating to approximately 850 BC, that age remains a preliminary estimate.
Archaeologists reached it by studying the location of the burial in relation to the surrounding volcanic deposits. The remains were found beneath ash associated with the eruption of Plan de la Laguna, believed to have occurred around 850 BC. This suggests that the burial took place before the eruption.
Radiocarbon analysis will now be used to determine a more precise age. DNA testing is also planned to help researchers learn more about the person, including whether the individual was biologically male or female.
Until those results are available, it is more accurate to describe this as possibly one of El Salvador’s oldest known burials rather than declare it the oldest.
Even with that caution, the discovery is extraordinary.
A Small Turtle Held in an Ancient Hand
One of the most moving details of the discovery is a small ceramic vessel found with the remains.
The vessel is made in the Usulután ceramic tradition and is shaped like a sea turtle. According to Flores Manzano, the individual appeared to have been holding it at the time of burial.
We cannot know with certainty what the vessel meant to the people who placed it there. It may have served as a funerary offering or carried a personal, spiritual, or symbolic meaning.
Turtles have often been associated with water, fertility, the earth, and the movement between different worlds. However, we should be careful about placing a modern interpretation on an object created by people whose beliefs we do not fully understand.
What we can say is that someone placed the vessel with this individual intentionally. That simple act brings a human dimension to the discovery. This was not merely a skeleton in the ground. This was a person remembered and buried by a community.
Researchers have also clarified that the individual was not killed by the volcanic eruption. The burial had taken place before ash covered the area.
Volcanic Ash as a Record of Time
Volcanoes have repeatedly changed the Salvadoran landscape. They have destroyed settlements and forced communities to move, but their ash has also preserved traces of earlier life.
At Pasaje 4, researchers identified two ancient yuca cultivation furrows beneath ash deposits from separate volcanic events.
One furrow was preserved beneath ash from the Plan de la Laguna eruption, dated to around 850 BC. Another was found below deposits associated with the great eruption of the Ilopango Caldera, dated between AD 431 and 539.
These are not simply marks in the soil. They are evidence of people working the land.
Long before modern Antiguo Cuscatlán became a center of homes, businesses, restaurants, and heavy traffic, families were planting yuca in this valley. They understood the seasons, prepared the ground, and depended upon the soil for their survival.
The preserved furrows allow us to see a small part of their daily lives.
Plan de la Laguna and the Landscape of Antiguo Cuscatlán
Research conducted by archaeologists Paul Amaroli and Robert Dull between 1998 and 1999 helped establish the volcanic history of Plan de la Laguna.
Researchers identified it as a monogenetic maar volcano. In simpler terms, it was formed by a single period of volcanic activity rather than repeated eruptions over many centuries.
Its eruption was phreatomagmatic. This type of explosion occurs when rising magma comes into contact with groundwater. The sudden interaction can produce tremendous pressure and violence.
Around 850 BC, that eruption sent ash across an already inhabited and cultivated landscape. The ash buried fields and other evidence of human occupation, creating a geological marker that archaeologists can still recognize today.
Centuries later, Ilopango produced another, much larger layer of volcanic deposits across central El Salvador.
Together, these volcanic layers function like pages in a book. Archaeologists can read their order and use them to reconstruct when people lived, planted crops, buried their dead, and returned after disaster.
Pasaje 4 Has Been Revealing Its History for Decades
The archaeological importance of Pasaje 4 has been known since 1987.
During work to install sewage and stormwater pipes, workers accidentally encountered prehispanic remains. Archaeologists Paul Amaroli and Gregorio Bello-Suazo responded to the discovery and carried out a rescue operation.
Reports indicate that nine burials from the Middle Preclassic period, generally dated between 900 and 650 BC, were identified in the area. However, the urban setting made a larger excavation difficult.
Homes, streets, businesses, traffic, and underground services all complicate archaeological work. Researchers cannot simply close an entire neighborhood and begin digging wherever they wish.
Flores Manzano and his team returned to Pasaje 4 with the necessary permits and a carefully planned excavation. Their goal was not only to recover objects but also to understand the order of the archaeological and geological layers beneath the community.
The recently recovered individual brings the known number of burials at the site to ten. Researchers believe more could remain beneath nearby streets, houses, or other sections of the ancient settlement.
Why This Discovery Matters
The importance of this discovery goes beyond the age of the skeleton.
First, it provides new evidence about some of the earliest settled communities in the Antiguo Cuscatlán valley. The burial, the ceramic vessel, and the agricultural furrows help us understand both ceremonial practices and everyday survival.
Second, it connects today’s city with a history much older than its modern appearance suggests. Antiguo Cuscatlán did not begin with shopping centers, office buildings, or residential neighborhoods. People were living and cultivating food in this valley thousands of years ago.
Third, the discovery shows why urban archaeology matters.
New pipes, roads, foundations, and drainage systems can expose material that has remained hidden for centuries. Development is necessary, but it must be accompanied by respect for the history beneath our feet.
Once an archaeological site is destroyed without being studied, the information it held can never be recovered.
Walking Over History
It is strange to imagine how many people may have walked along Pasaje 4 without knowing what rested beneath them.
Above the ground was the noise and movement of a modern Salvadoran city. Below it were an ancient burial, a turtle-shaped vessel, old fields, and layers of ash left by eruptions separated by more than a thousand years.
For almost 3,000 years, the person buried there remained part of the earth. We do not yet know whether this individual was a man or a woman. We do not know the person’s name, family, work, or beliefs.
However, the careful burial and the vessel held in the individual’s hand tell us something important: this was a human life that mattered to someone.
That may be the deepest value of archaeology. It does more than collect objects or establish dates. It returns a small part of people’s humanity to them.
The Past Has Not Disappeared
El Salvador is usually described as a young country, but the land holds a human story reaching back thousands of years.
Modern Antiguo Cuscatlán stands over ancient farms, burial places, and communities that lived under the constant presence of volcanoes. Eruptions changed their world, yet people continued to plant, rebuild, raise families, and honor their dead.
Today, one of those stories has risen through the ash.
Beneath the asphalt and volcanic earth, the memory of an ancient community has returned.
History does not disappear. It waits.
When the earth opens—through a trench, a pipe, or the careful hand of an archaeologist—it speaks.
