El Salvador’s Surge in International Tourists

According to the Ministry of Tourism’s data, El Salvador welcomed 1.6 million international tourists in the initial five months of this year, marking a 28% surge from the same period in 2023.

The government’s report highlights a direct economic impact of $1.529 billion in foreign exchange, a significant 11% increase from 2023, all attributed to the influx of international tourists.

Morena Valdez, the Minister of Tourism, has noted the positive ripple effect of international tourism on the local economy. She highlighted how the recent increase in international tourist arrivals has directly contributed to the economic vitality of hotels, restaurants, and tourist transportation services, a testament to the sector’s potential for growth and development.

The average spending by international tourists during their visit stood at approximately $1,382 per person, substantially contributing to the expansion of both the tourism sector and the broader national economy.”

The predominant countries of origin for visitors include the United States ( 40%), Guatemala ( 23%), and Honduras ( 15%), with the remaining 22% coming from various parts of the globe.
