El Salvador has officially kicked off 2026 by shattering tourism records. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur), the country welcomed 815,000 international visitors during the first two months of the year—a staggering 28% increase compared to the same period in 2025. This follows a historic January where the country saw its highest visitor count for that month in recent history, setting the stage for an even more explosive February.
A Historic Start to the Year
The surge was particularly notable in February, which saw 403,000 visitors—a 43% jump from the previous year. Tourism Minister Morena Valdez highlighted that February 2026 stands as the month with the highest number of international arrivals in the country’s history. The Minister noted that this success is a direct result of international events and the country’s transformation into a secure and attractive destination.
Global Interest in El Salvador
So, where is everyone coming from? While regional neighbors remain the strongest markets, growth is happening globally across several key regions:
- Guatemala: 317,000 visitors (+43%)
- United States: 215,000 visitors (+8%)
- Honduras: 159,000 visitors (+31%)
- Central American Neighbors: Nicaragua saw a 49% increase with 34,000 visitors, and Costa Rica surged by 94% with 14,000 visitors.
- North America: Beyond the US, Canada sent 15,000 visitors, and Mexico grew by 25% with 10,000 arrivals.
- European Surge: Germany led European growth with a massive 144% increase (3,000 visitors), followed by the UK at +88% and Spain at +18%.
What’s Driving the Surge?
The Ministry of Tourism attributes this massive growth to a combination of high-profile international events and the country’s significantly improved security climate. As we discussed in our recent look at how major events fuel growth, attractions in early 2026 included Shakira’s residence, the Ironman 70.3, and the Pan-American Maxi Basketball Tournament. These events, combined with a 0% homicide rate in several recent months, have created an environment where tourists feel safe to explore our beaches, volcanoes, and historic sites.
Looking Ahead: Holy Week
The momentum shows no signs of slowing down. With Semana Santa (Holy Week) just around the corner, the hotel sector is already reporting nearly 100% occupancy in popular areas. This includes fully renovated spots like the Apulo Recreational Park, which is ready to welcome the holiday crowds.
