Based on reporting from Diario El Salvador, May 2026
Economic data often reveals more than a headline. Today’s report from Diario El Salvador is a good example. It shows that the country’s financial foundations are strengthening in ways that are beginning to touch families, businesses, and communities across the country.
A Rise in Deposits That Reflects Confidence
The Superintendence of the Financial System reports that bank deposits reached $22,619.6 million by February 2026, a 16.8% increase compared to the same period last year.
That is not a small shift. It means Salvadorans—families and businesses alike—are saving more, keeping more money in the banking system, and showing growing trust in financial institutions.
Even month to month, the trend remains steady:
- + $494.7 million compared to December
- + $313.2 million compared to January
This is not a one-time jump. It is part of a consistent upward movement.
Demand Deposits Lead the Way
Demand deposits, including savings and checking accounts, showed the strongest growth. They reached $13,986.5 million, up 17.9% year over year, and now represent 62% of all deposits.
This matters because demand deposits reflect how people manage their day-to-day finances. This is the money used for living expenses, running businesses, and planning ahead.
When these deposits grow, it usually means people feel secure enough to keep their money accessible—rather than spending it quickly or locking it away for the long term.
Short-term time deposits also increased by 16.2%, showing that many are comfortable setting money aside for the near future.
A Financial System Growing on Multiple Fronts
The rise in deposits is only part of the story. The broader financial system is also expanding:
- Total assets: $28,889.3 million (+12.4% year-on-year)
- Gross loans: $19,238.7 million (+9%)
- Construction loans: +32.2% — the fastest-growing segment
- Consumer credit: 31.5% of the total loan portfolio
These numbers show a system that is not just growing, but becoming more balanced and active across sectors.
The surge in construction lending stands out. It often translates into new homes, infrastructure, and business development—changes that people can actually see taking shape in their communities.
A Healthier, More Resilient Banking Sector
Another important sign of strength is improving loan quality.
The non-performing loan ratio dropped to 1.4%, down from 1.7% last year. At the same time, banks now maintain reserves that cover 155% of risky loans.
That combination—lower risk and stronger reserves—points to a system that is better prepared to handle challenges while continuing to support growth.
What This Means for Daily Life
If you live here in El Salvador, these changes are not just numbers.
You may notice new construction along the road to Ahuachapán, more businesses opening, and families beginning to plan ahead instead of simply getting through the month.
Rising deposits do not cause these changes, but they reflect that they are happening.
They point to a country where:
- People feel more secure keeping money in banks.
- Businesses are expanding rather than holding back.
- Credit is flowing into sectors that build long-term value.
- Financial institutions are becoming more stable and trusted
This kind of progress may not always make international headlines, but it has a real and lasting impact on everyday life.
A Country Moving Forward
El Salvador’s economic story is still unfolding, but the February data show a clear direction. The financial system is strengthening, confidence is rising, and momentum is building from the ground up.
These are the quieter signs of progress—not driven by slogans or speeches, but by the everyday decisions of millions of Salvadorans who are saving, investing, and believing in the future.
A Personal Reflection
Living here in El Salvador, I’ve seen many of these changes take shape in everyday life. The numbers simply confirm what people are beginning to feel—a growing sense of stability and confidence in the future.
It’s not one big moment, but a steady movement forward.
