Every September, Mister Donut brings back its popular 2×1 donut promotion in El Salvador. It is one promotion I genuinely look forward to each year.
I have enjoyed this annual event since retiring and moving to El Salvador in 2011. Over the years, it has become a small September tradition for our family. We normally buy at least two dozen donuts because everyone in the family enjoys them—and a box of donuts does not last very long when the family gets together.
Apparently, we are not the only ones who eagerly await the promotion.
According to Diario El Salvador, Mister Donut’s annual 2×1 campaign has been offered nationally for more than 25 years. Its longevity helps explain why so many Salvadorans seem to associate September with boxes of Mister Donut donuts.
Eight Premium Flavors Added This Year
This year’s promotion is being presented under the theme “X Todos Lados,” or “Everywhere.” It is based on the familiar experience of craving something and then seeming to notice it everywhere you look.
In addition to its traditional flavors, Mister Donut has introduced eight premium seasonal varieties:
- Choco Pistacho
- Fresa Chocolate Blanco
- Menta Chocolate
- Choco Galleta
- Crema de Maní
- Pistacho
- Blueberry
- Café
These join familiar flavors such as strawberry, chocolate, toffee, coconut, lemon, Pixie, chocolate with peanuts, vanilla with peanuts, sugar and breadcrumbs.
I like all the flavors, so choosing only one favorite would be difficult. Part of the fun is bringing home a large assortment and allowing everyone in the family to select the ones they want.
A Two-Hour Wait for Donuts
My son Mat also enjoys the promotion. He loves visiting us during September so he can take advantage of the deal.
Last year, he was here during the first part of the month, and we went to buy our donuts. When we arrived, the line was so long that it took approximately two hours to reach the counter.
I might have reconsidered after seeing that line, but Mat was determined. He insisted that we wait, so we stayed—and eventually left with our donuts.
A two-hour line says quite a bit about the popularity of this promotion. It also taught us that going during the first few days of September may require patience.
A Promotion Connected to Independence Month
Mister Donut is also joining El Salvador’s Independence Day celebrations. During the week of September 15, the company is offering donuts decorated in blue and white, inspired by the colors of the Salvadoran flag.
This patriotic addition helps connect the promotion with the larger September celebrations taking place across the country. September is filled with flags, parades, traditional foods and family gatherings. For many people, Mister Donut’s promotion has also become part of the season.
The 2×1 offer is available throughout September for customers dining inside the restaurants, ordering takeout or using drive-through service. Home delivery is available exclusively through PedidosYa.
Mister Donut also operates several locations around the clock, including its restaurants in Santa Ana and Sonsonate. The company says its donuts will be freshly produced 24 hours a day throughout the promotion.
More Than a Business Promotion
Of course, the 2×1 campaign is a successful marketing strategy. It brings customers into the restaurants, encourages people to purchase larger quantities and gives Mister Donut an opportunity to introduce new flavors.
However, after more than 25 years, it has also developed into something more. It has become a tradition that people remember, anticipate and share with their families.
Some traditions are connected to major holidays or historical events. Others develop around simple pleasures that families enjoy together. For us, bringing home at least two dozen Mister Donut donuts each September has become one of those pleasures.
It may not be the healthiest family tradition, but it is certainly one of the tastiest.
Now we have eight new premium flavors to try—and I suspect we will need another large assortment so no one feels left out.
