Even though I’ve never been much of a coffee drinker myself, I’ve always loved the smell of coffee — that warm aroma drifting through kitchens, mercados, and small cafés tucked into city streets. In El Salvador, coffee has always been more than a drink. It’s part of the country’s identity, woven into its landscapes, traditions, and daily life.
Today, that connection is helping reshape the Historic Center of San Salvador in a way that feels both modern and deeply rooted in the past.
What is happening there now is bigger than coffee alone. It is about restoration, entrepreneurship, culture, and the rediscovery of spaces that for many years were overlooked or avoided.
A Historic Center Finding New Life
Over the last several years, San Salvador’s Historic Center has undergone a remarkable transformation. Restoration projects, increased security, tourism growth, and the rise of locally owned businesses have helped create a district that feels alive again.
Walking through the area today, visitors can find:

The atmosphere is very different from what many people remember from years past.

Café Fulanos and the Pride of Salvadoran Coffee
One of the cafés helping shape this movement is Café Fulanos, known for specialty coffee varieties such as Bourbon Rojo and Bourbon Meleño, offering tasting notes of chocolate, vanilla, and caramel.

They represent generations of Salvadoran agricultural tradition, especially from regions like Apaneca-Ilamatepec, where coffee cultivation has long been part of the local economy and culture.

Nearby, Dante Croissants & Café combines specialty coffee with artisan baking, bringing together European-inspired techniques with Salvadoran ingredients and flavors.
This growing culinary experimentation shows that San Salvador is increasingly becoming a place where innovation and tradition coexist.
Restoring History While Building the Future
One of the most meaningful examples of this transformation is Café La Dalia, located inside the historic Portal La Dalia building, originally dating back to 1885.
This café represents more than another business opening downtown.
It symbolizes:
- Historic preservation
- Economic reactivation
- Job creation
- Support for local suppliers
- New opportunities for tourism and culture
The Historic Center’s rebirth is not only about modern development. It is also about respecting the city’s architectural and cultural history while giving those spaces new life.

These kinds of hybrid spaces are becoming increasingly important in the identity of the Historic Center.

And perhaps that is one of the strongest signs of true urban renewal:
when people once again feel inspired to gather, create, and participate in public life.
International Recognition for Salvadoran Coffee
The growth of San Salvador’s coffee scene is also gaining international attention. Several Salvadoran coffee shops were recently recognized among some of the best coffee experiences in the world during 2026.
Among them:
- Alquimia Coffee earned third place worldwide
- Viva Espresso entered the global Top 100
- Café del Centro also gained international recognition
For a country that has often been overlooked internationally, this kind of recognition matters.
It shows that Salvadoran quality, creativity, and entrepreneurship are reaching a level that the world is beginning to notice.

Even as someone who does not regularly drink coffee, I can appreciate what coffee represents in El Salvador.

These cafés are not simply places to buy a drink. They are part of a larger story unfolding in San Salvador — the story of a Historic Center reclaiming its place as a living cultural heart of the country.
